Thanks for sharing Thanks for sharing
Thanks for sharing the story of Dina and Maher el-Gohary with me from the Washington Times. I want to be clear dear brother, and whoever else reads this, when talking about this serious and sober topic of persecution. Believers were promised that some among them would suffer at the hands of others for their faith. Indeed, Paul said all who live g-dly in Him would suffer persecution (II Timothy 3:12). Please do not think I am being cold and heartless when I say that reading such stories can’t help but remind me of many passages of Scripture, such as for example: John 15:20-23 “Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also. But all these things will they do unto you for my name’s sake, because they know not him that sent me. He that hateth me hateth my Father also.” John 16:1-3 “These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be offended. They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth G-d service. And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me.” Luke 21:12, 16 “But before all these, they shall lay their hands on you, and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues, and into prisons, being brought before kings and rulers for my name’s sake.” “And ye shall be betrayed both by parents, and brethren, and kinsfolks, and friends; and some of you they shall cause to be put to death.” But, lest I leave the impression we be left without comfort and motivation to endure such hard times, when we are among those cast into such conditions we are given to remember: John 12:25 “He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal.” And the parallel (and older) text: Mark 8:35 “For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel’s, the same shall save it” And when we face death, by whatever threatens our earthly lives here, we can be comforted and encouraged by such verses as: Romans 8:38-39 “For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of G-d, which is in Christ Jesus our L-rd.” Romans 14:8 “For whether we live, we live unto the L-rd; and whether we die, we die unto the L-rd: whether we live, therefore, or die, we are the L-rd’s.” Luke 21:18 “…there shall not an hair of your head perish.” John 11:25-26 “Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth on me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: and whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this? Those who endure such misery are promised a crown of life. Observe Saul (Paul’s) words as he wrote from prison, prior to his execution: 2 Timothy 4:6 “For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand.” This he said while awaiting the sentence of death against him by a Roman, rather than Egyptian, government hostile to the Gospel. But, because his faith was sincere, his heart was secure, even in the face of death: “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.” (verse 7). What awaited him after leaving this world? “Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the L-rd, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day” ( 2 Timothy 4:8a) Was this “crown of righteousness” exclusively given for him alone? In no wise! “And not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.” (2 Timothy 4:8b). This expression Paul makes, of ‘not for us only’ he spoke earlier, regarding the imputation (attribution) of faith to us as righteousness (Romans 4:23-24). Remember how Paul had told the Philippians that, because of their steadfast faith, they were: “…in nothing terrified by…adversaries: which is to them an evident token of perdition, but to you of salvation, and that of G-d.” (Philippians 1:28). This was because (Philippians 1:29): “For unto you it is given on behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake.” This same Paul was well-acquainted with sufering and experienced the following agonies for the sake of his L-rd: “Of the Jews five times received I forty stripes save one. Thrice was I beaten with rods, once was I stoned, thrice I suffered shipwreck, a night and a day I have been in the deep; In journeyings often, perils of waters, perils of robbers, perils by countrymen, perils by the heathen, perils in the city, perils in the wilderness, perils in the sea, perils among false brethren; in weariness, and painfulness, in watchings often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness” ( 2 Corinthians 11:25-27). Although he did not suffer “more than any man” as the L-rd of Glory had, he stands out as a peculiar example among mere men who suffer for His name’s sake. Whenever I take a few moments to think on what Paul endured, and what people like Dina and Maher are going through, and the lives of those spoken about in John Fox’s “Book of Martyrs,” I am thankful for the comfort of the Scriptures and the remembrance given me of them by the Holy Spirit. I am encouraged and humbled when reading of their unwavering faith in the face of physical adversity, suffering patiently the contradiction of sinners against them, and reminded that I too may one day be called to face the same circumstances as Maher el-Gohary. (See Hebrews 11:36-38). Paul was let down the wall in a basket by two, graciously retaining his life early in his ministry (Acts 9:25). Peter was miraculously delivered from prison to preserve his life likewise (Acts 12:7). Notwithstanding such deliverances Stephen, after delivering a marvelous, inspired testimony before the Jews was stoned, and delivered to death (Acts 7:59). Let us therefore pray for Dina and Maher el-Gohary, and for all around the world, whose names we don’t know, who suffer persecution for their faith, that they might graciously be delivered from their persecuting captors, but if not, that they shall remain steadfast in the faith, even unto death if necessary, and may their courage and faithfulness be seen by others as a beacon testifying of Him, that they too might be saved.
